Carlo Antonio Tavella (Milan 1668 - Genoa 1738) Landscape with characters Oil on canvas 98 x 131 cm A pupil of Giuseppe Merati and the vedutista/landscape painter Johann, Giovanni, Grevenbroeck or Greuenbrech, known as " Solfarolo," in 1695 Tavella worked with Pieter Mulier, known as Cavalier Tempesta, one of the indispensable figures in the birth of landscape painting in Italy. A skilled and appreciated landscape painter, he collaborated in this capacity with Alessandro Magnasco, Domenico and Paolo Gerolamo Piola. His fine and cultured pictorial language was the result of various influences. In addition to the aforementioned Tempesta there are Roman echoes inferred from Crescenzio Onofri and Pandolfo Reschi, whose works he saw during his stays in Tuscany. In addition, there is no lack of afflations of the landscape painting of Gaspard Dughet, as well as Salvator Rosa as evidenced by the lower register of the present work. All this stylistic evidence found suggests that he stayed in Rome. Carlo Antonio Tavella (Milan 1668 - Genoa 1738) Landscape With Characters Oil on canvas 98 x 131 cm
