Pietro Della Vecchia (Venice 1603 - Vicenza 1678) Palm reader reads the palm of his hand to a soldier Oil on panel 38.5 x 41.5 cm The subject was repeatedly replicated by the Venetian master as shown by the works: from the Civic Museum in Vicenza, larger and more articulate; another reported by Fiocco at the Warsaw Museum; a third published by Pallucchini in La pittura veneziana del Seicento, vol. I, p. 178, table XIII. He was a pupil of Alessandro Varotari, known as il Padovanino, along with Pietro Liberi and Girolamo Forabosco; from the master he took an interest in sixteenth-century Venetian painting, particularly that of Titian and Giorgione. He was the executor of bizarre and highly regarded fantasy portraits and scenes of life with bravos, commoners and pairs of lovers, painted in Renaissance costumes.
