A nephew of Giuseppe Bazzani, his first teacher, following his uncle's death he went to study with Giuseppe Bottani, from whom he took up the style of Neoclassicism. He was active in several cities in Italy including his native Mantua, Milan and Rome, especially as an esteemed portrait painter. He was also an important teacher, at his studio Giuseppe Tominz, Pietro Benvenuti, Giuseppe Bossi and Felice Giani were trained. Famous are the portraits of Canova and Maria Theresa of Habsburg Lorraine, future wife of Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy.
