The Spirits of Flame and Smoke & The Spirits of Sea and Waves, [L'Eau et le Feu], circa 1900, one-of-a-kind pieces
Exceptional pair of circular medallions with quartered pendants.
Each piece features a title decoration in polychrome enamel on copper, with colored pearl and gold backgrounds, and a central circular concave section enriched by five convex trapezoid cartouches.
Each work is set in a neoclassical copper frame with laurel motifs, embellished with small cabochons also in enamel on copper; blue imitating sapphires for one frame, red evoking rubies for the other.
Very minor scratches and accidents, one frame is missing three small ruby cabochons.
One of the frames bears an old paper label on the back with the handwritten words: N°6 - Oswald CROMPTON - Shirley Cottage Whickham Road Croydon - 13Amberley Street Sunderland (old address crossed out) - England - Title: The Spirits of Flame & Smoke.
