Our carpets photographed in situ in images reproduced on pages 327 to 330 in an article entirely devoted to Serge Rovinsky's decoration for the artist Nadine Oxnard by Georges Rémon. Historical background: Nadine Oxnard, an American painter, created a body of work marked by color, exoticism and a certain dreamlike quality. Based in Paris, she exhibited at the Galerie Jacques Bonjean in 1934, as well as at the 1935 Fourth Exhibition of the Association of Modern American and English Artists at the Galerie de Paris. However, the artist remains best known for her taste in the decorative arts. Nadine Oxnard acquired the black lacquer sideboard, the result of a collaboration between Jean Dunand (1877-1942) and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879-1933), which was presented at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Industriels et Modernes. She later entrusted the decoration of her Paris apartment to architect, painter and decorator Serge Rovinsky (1895-1945). The Polish-born decorator's most important commission, this now-famous furnishing included many unique pieces of furniture, characterized by their refinement and elegance, which he created especially for her with the help of Jean Dunand and Ateliers Charpentier. The American painter herself participated in the decoration of her sumptuous apartment, imagining carpets that she had made in Kairouan, reflecting her attraction to color and exoticism, which fit in perfectly with the décor [singularly enamored of color and fine preciousness] that Rovinsky designed according to his client's wishes.
