Acknowledgements: We would like to thank the artist's successor for confirming the authenticity of this work. Important note: Our print will appear in the catalog raisonné of Paul Jouve's sculptural work currently being prepared by Dominique Suisse. Historical background: This is a representation of one of the two small panthers that Jouve raised in his studio. This one, named Marraghem, with its highly ocellated coat, was originally from Chad. As she grew, this panther proved difficult to keep, so the artist sold her to the Médrano circus, where she ended her life. All bronze proofs of La Jeune panthère were made in lost-wax from 1935 onwards, by the Valsuani foundry, as exhibitions and commissions came in. Of the seven proofs produced by Valsuani, five have been located to date, and Jouve subsequently called on the Godard foundry to produce two new proofs, numbered 1/2 and 2/2 respectively. One of these is now in the collections of the Musée des Années 30, Boulogne-Billancourt.
