In this work, Calonne draws up a critical assessment of France's situation and foretells the disastrous period that will follow for France and the French: "It is time, it is more than time to disabuse the people: I will show them that the future being prepared for them is even more dreadful than the present; I will make them see that the constitution promised to them is contrary to their wishes, to their interests, to reason; & that it is moreover an impracticable chimera: I will have no trouble making people recognize that it is impossible for the French, to be without a King & without a government, to become happier; I will reveal the burden of taxation that perseverance in the systems we have followed would inevitably lead to: finally I will prove, clearly enough to be heard by everyone, that the entire dissolution of the Monarchy is the consequence of everything we have done, & that if we do not hurry to put things in order, the Kingdom will perish" (p. XV). It is bound following: DESSERRES-LATOUR - Letter to M. de Calonne in response to his work on "L'État de la France, présent et à venir". Paris, chez Chalon, 1790. In-8, 144pp. Untrimmed.
