Castilian school, XVI century. Circle of Juan de Anchieta (Azpetitia, Guipúzcoa, c.1533?- Pamplona, 1588)
Virgin and Child.
Polychrome wood carving, gilded and stewed. The image shows the Virgin holding the Child in her left arm, while with the other hand picks up her mantle. Her clothes of abundant fabrics that reinforce her monumentality stand out. Her face is of great serenity, with a long hair of bulky curls while the Child holds with his right hand the orb. This carving represents the ideals of Romanism, an adaptation of the Italian mannerism of Michelangelo and his followers characterized by the conception of figures of great idealization, of exalted anatomy and full of strength.
118 x 50 x 45 cm.
