After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde film and literature, a notoriety that was supported by a skillful relationship with the media and his role as a guru of modernity. Warhol used different media to create his works, such as hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silkscreen, sculpture, film and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, contains an extensive permanent collection of art. He was a controversial figure during his lifetime and since his death in 1987 has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, analyses, books and documentaries.
