Ring in 22-carat matte gold, set with a diamond and a piece of glass cut with triangular facets, the inner part of the ring engraved with inscriptions in Latin, English or French to be deciphered. Probably 19th century, in the taste of the XIV-XV centuries. Gross weight: 7.78 g. TDD : 49. (A spectrometer test indicated a predominantly 22 ct gold content, with very low silver and copper titration). Related works Similar rings are in the V A Museum, London, inv. M.189-1962. History Love and affection were frequently expressed through inscriptions around the rings. Rings inscribed in this way are known as "posy" (poetry) rings. Sometimes in Latin, these inscriptions are most often found in French, the language of courtly love, which would have been widely understood by the elites of medieval Europe. The love inscriptions on the rings are often repeated, suggesting that the goldsmiths had reference books containing common expressions. Sancy expertise Paris
