CRESCENZIO ONOFRI
(Rome 1634 - Florence 1714)
LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERDS AND WAYFARERS
Oil on canvas, 99 x 134 cm.
PROVENANCE
Roman family
In the genre of landscape painting between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Crescenzio Onofri, a pupil and follower of Gaspard Dughet, is remembered among the leading exponents. He worked for the most important Roman families, such as the Pamphilj, where work with Dughet is documented, and also with the Colonna, Rospigliosi and Odescalchi families. Onofri's landscape taste retains Dughet's imprint but often with more fantastic accents as revealed by this beautiful view of the Roman countryside where echoes of classicism blend with darker atmospheres
