Chest of drawers with two drawers and no crossbar, inlaid with flowers and gilt bronze highlights. The uprights are decorated with women's profiles. Opens through a side door. Peach blossom marble, Louis XV period. Stamped KRIEGER. 88x112x55 cm. In the second half of the 19th century, the prestigious Krieger firm established itself as one of the most prestigious workshops in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Any cabinetmaker who wanted to secure a career had to be admitted to its ranks. The great bourgeoisie flocked to rue de la Paix, and this reputation, which transcended national borders, attracted monarchs from all over Europe to purchase chests of drawers and other furniture with sumptuous marquetry. Krieger won prizes at the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie in 1849, and at the Universal Exhibitions of 1851 and 1855. Antoine Krieger (1804-1869) moved to Paris with his brother Nicolas around 1826, and remained in business until 1856, when his sons-in-law took over. Chests of drawers of this quality rarely reappear on the market, and in recent years, no fewer than fifteen pieces have appeared at public sales.
