China, Jiaqing period (1796-1820).
A shuang er zun vase in fencai (famille rose) enamels on a ruby background, marked Jiaqing in red on a turquoise blue background on the reverse.
This imperial vase evokes happiness and has been carefully painted. Refinement is omnipresent: delicate figures with peaceful gestures, vegetation with both precise and supple features, poetic clouds. The carefree spirit of childhood and the sweetness of life at court emanate from this representation. The belly is decorated with the yingxi theme: court children playing in the garden, picking flowers, playing with quails, etc.... On the shoulder, lotus flowers bloom beneath gilded wanzi wen motifs on a background of intertwining ruyis and foliage. The two stylized handles are scattered with blue dots and circles. The lip is highlighted with gilding and a frieze of ruyis. The interior of the vase is enamelled in turquoise blue, as is the background. The foot is decorated with foliage and flowers. A frieze of lotuses and peonies, surmounted by ruyis, decorates the base.
Porcelain with fencai enamels (famille rose). Height: 28.2 cm.
The vase has been mounted as a lamp.
Slight lack of gilding on the base, a hair on the lip.
Provenance: collected by Elie de Commaille (1873 - 1906), secretary of the Tonkin Chamber of Agriculture from 1902. The vase has remained in the family ever since.
Auction reference: Christie's London 21-10-2008 for a similar model. Museography: a similar model without handle is kept at the Palace Museum in Beijing.
