CORSICA. - GERMANÈS (Pierre-Barthélemy). Histoire des révolutions de Corse, depuis ses premiers habitans jusqu'à nos jours. Paris, chez Hérissant, le fils, 1771 (vol. I and II) then Paris, chez Demonville, 1776 (vol. III). 3 volumes in-12, (xx)-329-(7 of which the last 2 are blank) + (4)-316-(4) + x-(2)-358-(2) pp. in brown marbled calf, ribbed spines with partitions and fleurons and garnet titles, filleted edges, red edges, corners a little rubbed (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION, complete with the third and last volume published by another publisher. A FORMER VICAR GENERAL OF THE BISHOP OF SAGONA, ABBÉ GERMANÈS was a Father of Christian Doctrine originally from Saint-Remi-de-Provence, and was first successively canon of Saint-Quentin, and vicar general of Saint-Brieuc and then of Rennes. After being relieved of the duties associated with the latter ministry, he lived in the community of Saint-Roch in Paris. In 1776, he was appointed vicar-general to the bishop of Sagone, with responsibility for inspecting the four royal colleges in Corsica. On his initiative, two memoirs were published in 1783 to promote the idea of re-founding higher education on the island, which would be free to organize the debate of ideas. When the French Revolution broke out, Abbé Germanès returned to his hometown, where he earned his living as an attorney. Provenance: magistrate and historian Xavier Versini (double bookplate on each volume, with his signature on p. 11 and his initials on p. 26).
