GABRIEL SYMEONI Fiorentino. ILLUSTRATIONE DE GLI EPITAFFI ET MEDAGLIE ANTICHE. IN LIONE, PER GIOVAN DI TOURNES, 1558. One volume, in-8, (8) ff, 174 pp, (1) f., 19th-century half-bound in fawn calf with corners. Spine with 5 gilt ribbons, gilt fillets, gilt edges. Light rubbing to corners. Vignette on title page, numerous illustrations in the text, some by Bernard Salomon (?) and G Reverdy(?). First edition in Italian. The frontispiece is adorned with a woodcut in the oval of which reads "Natura ite impellimur, ut prodesse velimus", verso, woodcut portrait of the author; above the dedication to Alphonse d'Est, Prince of Ferrara, and dated Lion, August 20, 1558, Diana on a chariot drawn by two stags, preceded and followed by two women with dogs; vue de l'Isle sur la Sorgue et maison de Pétarque ; cirque antique ; médaille de Castor et Pollux ; St Irénée et Esculape à Lyon ; la fontaine d'Anet et Diane chasseresse ; la métamorphose d'Actéon en Cerf par Diane-Artémis ; la grotte de Medone ; médaille de Salomon ; etc. Manuscript on an index card, slipped into the book, we are told: "In his 1897 work on Bernard Salomon M. Natalis Rondot says he does not believe the illustrations are by Bernard Salomon, see page 78."
