CHIRVAN carpet (Caucasus), late 19th century
Dimensions: 126 x 120cm.
Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation.
A brick field sown with small animals, figures, hourglasses, stars, ornaments and symbolic forms, hosts four stylized medallions, entomological in form, polychrome, serrated and chequered (kilim-style decoration). An anthracite border with cruciform florets flanks the main ivory border, with multicolored "S" braces. Navy and brick border with chess pieces in positive and negative.
