SILVERIO RIVAS (Ponteareas, Galicia, 1942). Untitled. 1990. Iron and steel sculpture. Signed on the base. Measurements: 200 x 40 x 20 cm. With a language based on abstraction, the work of Silverio Rivas is ascribed to the constructivist tradition. His pieces -worked in diverse materials such as granite, bronze, iron, steel, lead, marble, wood, polyester fiber, stoneware or clay- take into account the play of shapes and the intrinsic and changeable space. An artist trained in his father's cabinetmaking workshop, Silverio Rivas stood out in the seventies and continued his training at the Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in Vigo. He worked with Carlos Sobrino Buhigas, Luis Achicharras Martínez and Camilo Nogueira Martínez; in the foundry workshop of Xoán Piñeiro Nogueira; in Madrid, where he entered the School of Arts and Crafts on Calle de la Palma and attended evening classes at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and in Sargadelos, which led him to innovate with articulated and detachable ceramic sets. He worked in Paris. He was part of the Atlántica movement since 1980. In 1992 he received the Galician Critics' Prize for Sciences and Arts of Representation and in 2015 the Laxeiro Prize. Rivas is currently represented in the Museo Municipal Quiñones de León in Vigo, in the Afundación Collection and in the Museo de Bellas Artes in La Coruña. He also has works in public spaces in several towns in Galicia.
