SMALL BUTSUDAN in black lacquered wood on the outside, gold on the inside, enhanced by chased copper fittings, opening onto a figure of Shaka Nyorai Buddha standing on a lotus resting on a high hexagonal base, leaning against a mandorla adorned with clouds, his right hand raised in vitarkamudra ("gesture of teaching") and his left hand lowered in varadamudra ("gesture of generosity").
