ROUEN, Masseot Abaquesne workshop, 16th century, circa 1545.
Slightly arched earthenware albarello with polychrome decoration of a winged young man's face seen from the front, set in a foliate scrollwork frame embellished with tulips, double fillets, yellow and orange, and friezes of bâtons rompus or crosses. The top edge is beveled.
H: 23.5 cm
Similar piece: this albarello is similar to the one in the Charles Lair collection, in the Musée de Saumur, also depicting a juvenile male face seen from the front, and also executed realistically, and seems to count, in terms of style, among the earliest executed by the workshop.

This albarello is probably part of the order placed by Rouen apothecary Pierre Dubosc in 1545 with Masseot Abaquesne for 4152 pharmacy jars, including 3720 albarelli.
