In the 19th century, Renaissance aesthetics and techniques underwent a veritable revival. The works of Luca della Robbia, the 15th-century sculptor and ceramist of genius, as well as those of his workshop and his successors, were at the heart of this craze. Numerous factories, particularly in Italy, devoted themselves to "Robbianesque" production, reinvesting Della Robbia's most characteristic typologies of glazed terracottas featuring white or monochrome figures on a blue background with colored highlights. Testifying to an assimilated fascination, our relief is part of a corpus of reinterpretations of major Renaissance works.
