Georges ENESCO (1881-1955). 5 L.A.S., Bucharest, January 1934-November 1935, to Yvonne Astruc and her husband Marcel Ciampi; 4 pages in-8. January 11, 1934. He begins the year under sad auspices, with the announced disappearance "of a deeply loved brother...it's going to be appalling"... He asks to postpone the courses he was to give in the spring to the autumn and to make them "coincide, with Brunetière's help, with my concerts which, this time, I will give whatever the cost [...].] My dismay is very great - To console myself I have written a 3rd Sonata for piano [...] and I ask Marcel's permission to dedicate it to him, as a token of my gratitude"... - July 8. "You can absolutely count on me this winter: even if I'm ill, I'll be at my post [...] I'm doing admirably, in the middle of composing"... April 2, 1935. He is immersed in "my scribbling on ruled paper, my supreme pleasure. I haven't finished the copy of Marcel's Sonata, because I want to make 2-3 alterations, incorrigible!"... - August 20. He forwards a letter of recommendation for the Canadian violinist Lucien Martin (he asks Madame Ciampi to take care of it), on the back of which he makes a few reflections on the violin repertoire, which he finds "shabby": "Couldn't we, to widen my field of action, ask Monteux to give me the P° and Vn sonatas only"... - November 2. He is unable to leave Romania and has cancelled his December tour and that of America; he does not even know if he will be able to come in the spring: "Will you be able to wait until then to make the necessary announcements? [...] Nevertheless, I can assure you that my composition work is in full swing, and that my health is perfect"...
