Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (1865-1953) Vue de Venise, voiliers sur le Grand Bassin Brown ink on paper signed lower right 42 x 62 cm Condition report: Framed Close to the Symbolist movement, the artists Émile Bernard and Gustave Moreau, and the writer Pierre Loti, Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer started out as a ceramist before devoting himself to painting, and above all to the pastel technique in which he excelled. His art is based on a mastery of drawing and pure line, while a skilful play on the velvety, matte quality of pastel lends depth to his enigmatic compositions. While developing his visionary work, he also enjoyed some success as a portraitist.
