André Maire (1888-1984) Chioggia, Canal Vena 1922 Ink and wash on paper signed and dated lower right 57 x 74 cm Condition report: Framed French painter born in Paris. Following the death of his parents, he earns his living working in a theater set factory. The painter Émile Bernard soon became his guide and protector. In 1922, he marries his daughter, with whom he settles in Venice, while remaining strongly attached to Paris. He developed the sepia technique and won the Casa Velasquez Prize in 1930. His work is marked by his many travels around the world, particularly in Europe, Asia and Africa. A humanist vision emerges from his art, fueled by his travels, which enabled him to discover diverse landscapes and cultures. From the 1930s onwards, he exhibited in major galleries in Paris and Brussels. (MLD)
