A Dutch artist born in Arnhem, Dorothée Charlotte van Pallandt was one of the first women in the Netherlands to devote herself entirely to sculpture. Born into a wealthy aristocratic family, she studied at London's Ealing Art College and perfected her drawing skills in The Hague under the guidance of painter Albert Roelofs. After her divorce in Switzerland, she moved to Paris and became a pupil of André Lhote, whose work on cubism had a strong influence on her. In 1928, she took up sculpture, first in The Hague, then in Italy and finally in Paris, where she studied at the Académie Ranson under Charles Malfray. Through Fred Carasso, she met Truus Trompert, a nude model who inspired her Truus-beeldjes series. In 1948, she exhibited for the first time at the Santee Landweer gallery in Amsterdam. The Charlotte van Pallandt Prize is an annual award for promising young sculptors.
