Anthonie Wierix, Maerten de Vos, The Crucifixion, First state / Description: Passion of Christ: The Crucifixion; three soldiers seen nailing and tying Christ to the Cross; Pilate on a horseback giving orders to two soldiers; in a decorative border with animals and flowers including a rose. Engraving made by Antonius Wierix (1552-1604) after: Maarten de Vos (1532-1603), published by: Eduard van Hoeswinckel (fl. 1570s-died 1583). A first state on five before the text, signatures and the number. The border reminds the decoration of hand painted miniatures, especially the ones in the style of Bruges from 15th century. The mixture of animals and flowers is very attractive. / Dimensions: 19,50 x 16,20 cmm / Condition: Excellent brilliant early impression of the first state before any text or number, with full plate border and tread margins at three sides, on plate border at bottom, on a dense clearly watermarked laid paper.
