Alessandro Magnasco (Genoa 1667-1749) - Landscape with Characters H cm 178x158 - in frame H cm 192x174 The painting under consideration is a valuable testimony to the landscape works of Alessandro Magnasco, known as the Lissandrino because of his petite stature. Magnasco called himself "Genoese by birth, Milanese by election," in fact the Lombard city welcomed him for several years and here he shaped and defined his painting style. This painting brings together the main features of the artistic production of Magnasco's second Milanese sojourn. The palette of dark but rich colors, the swirling brushstrokes, and the small human figures hidden among the shadows help make these works theatrical, unprecedented, and recognizable. Lissandrino shows the magnificence of nature and the power it has over humans, making them only small and silent actors who shyly coexist with it. The vegetation depicted in the painting under analysis presence several consonances with that of the work Landscape with Peasants, preserved at The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo and also signed Magnasco. Likewise, the rapid and virtuosic rendering of the landscape depicted in the work under analysis, which reveals Lissandrino's typical touch, can be compared with another work by the Genoese artist, Landscape with Hermit, which went to auction in December 2022 at Cambi Auction House.
