French Revolution period. Louis Charles Antoine Desaix (1768-1800), of provincial nobility, joined the Revolution while his family emigrated. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a general at the age of 25. He distinguished himself in the revolutionary wars in Germany, Egypt and Italy. He died at the age of 31 at the battle of Marengo, leading an infantry charge.
