Executioner Charles Sanson - a letter, dated 30 January 1720 Folded double sheet (small defects), handwritten on both sides in ink, attached red wax seal. Charles Sanson (II) writes to a Monsieur Le Couturier in Paris, after having tried in vain to speak to him personally, and asks him to send him an urgently needed "ordonnance". Partially slightly damaged, traces of age. Measures 20 x 16 cm. The progenitor of the Sanson family of executioners, a soldier in the French royal army named Charles Sanson (1658 - 1695) from Abbeville, was appointed executioner of Paris in 1688. After his death in 1695, the bloody office was transferred to his son (1681 - 1726), who was also called Charles. The executioner of King Louis XVI came from this family. Condition: II +
