César de Bourbon, Duc de Vendôme was the son of Henri IV and Gabrielle d'Estrées, and is depicted in armor, adorned with the Cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit. He was appointed Grand Admiral of France and Superintendent General of Navigation.
This portrait is based on a print by Balthasar Moncornet (1600-1668).
