Honoré de Balzac, Etudes de moeurs du XIXe siècle - tome VIII, IX & X. Paris, Werdet, 1837 ; Madame Charles-Béchet, 1835-1834. 3 volumes in-8, [4]-357-[1bl]-[1]p, 339p & [4]-366-[1]p. Original editions of the texts contained here. Volume VIII corresponds to the 4th volume of Scènes de la vie de province. Its preface (dated January 15, 1837) will not be reproduced, and Lost Illusions is an original edition. The text will subsequently be expanded. Volumes IX and X correspond to the 1st and 2nd volumes of Scènes de la vie parisienne. They contain a preface (dated August 30, 1833) that will never be reproduced. The three texts in volume IX - La femme vertueuse; La Bourse; Le papa Gobsexk - are heavily modified and can be considered as first editions. They were published between 1830 and 1832. On the other hand, the texts in Volume X - Les Marana; Histoire des Treize: Premier épisode. Ferragus, chef des Dévorans - are first editions. The second text was given a Belgian preface after publication in the Revue de Paris. The text in our edition contains numerous variants, with P-G Castex noting around 50. Unbound copy, brown spots, one section detached.
