Honoré de Balzac, L'école des ménages, bourgeois tragedy in five acts and prose. Paris, Carteret, 1907. In-4, 239p. Posthumous first edition. Preceded by a letter by Vte de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait under serpente, after Bertall, and headpieces, ornate letters and culs-de-lampe by Robaudi engraved by Manesse. Edition of 300 copies, one of 225 on vellum (n°264). This play was written in 1838-39, and only 12 proofs were printed at the time, all of which were destroyed except for the Viscount de Lovenjoul's copy. Paperback, untouched. A fine copy.
