Ⓟ VIETNAM, Ecole des Beaux Arts de l'Indochine, XXe siècle Rare Coromandel lacquer twelve-leaf folding screen Carved and polychromed lacquer on a red ground, presenting on one side a lively scene of dignitaries and elegant ladies in pavilions and luxuriant gardens, the borders decorated with antique objects, fruit and flowers. The other side is decorated with a multitude of bird couples in flowering branches. The piece bears a red engraved mark "MBIA" on the reverse, lower right. Việt Nam, Trường Mỹ thuật Đông Dương, thế kỷ 20 Kích thước của một tấm: 169 x 35.5 cm This double-sided folding screen is part of the body of work produced in the workshops of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, under the influence of artist and teacher Nguyen Van Ban (1912-1999), who specialized in this type of production. They are largely inspired by Chinese Coromandel screens, which were manufactured in China from the 17th century onwards and became very popular in China and the rest of the world. Here, although the stylistic codes of Coromandel productions are respected, the Chinese scenes are readapted to Vietnamese history. The whole is depicted in vivid colors that stand out masterfully against the purple lacquer background.
