Provenance: Sale of the Collection of M. Paul Chevalier by the firm of Maurice RHEIMS on Tuesday March 20, 1956, attributing this painting to Brueghel de Velours. Acquired by the buyer that day, then kept by descendants.
A black-and-white photograph reproducing this painting, bearing on the back an attestation concerning authentication: "Vienna, October 17, 1935. I have carefully examined this painting on wood, 20.5x32.5cm, reproduced by the present protograph, and consider it to be an authentic work by Jan Brueghel the Elder, known as de Velours, of witty execution and clear, charming color, Gustav Glück (Professor Glück, former curator of the Vienna Museum).
