SAROUK carpet (Persia), late 19th century Dimensions: 201 x 135cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on cotton backing. This Sarouk rug is strangely decorated: six vases at either end of the rug produce an explosion of multicolored, scrolling vegetal sprays on a marine field. While providing shelter for numerous birds, they seem to meet in the center, where a flowery rosette stands out. Four small "Abjad" letters line the field. The frame is composed of a chestnut main border, with a series of blossoming corollas, flanked by two small ivory counter-borders with garlands of flowers. Beautiful graphics.
