ISPAHAN silk carpet (Persia), 1st third of the 20th century Dimensions: 240 x 145cm. Technical features: Silk velvet on silk backing. Density of 900,000 knots per square meter. A salmon-pink field provides the background for this delicate rug. Two deer and two wading birds stand at the foot of a flowering vase and two shrubs, supporting a tangle of stems and foliage, each with its own sumptuous flowers. Birds flutter about in the midst of this maze. A sky-blue diamond-shaped medallion with arabesques and a stylized lantern enhance the whole. The mihrab vaults are subtly delineated by sky-blue scrolls. Four counter borders with multicolored flower garlands frame the main ivory one with leafy, flowering stems. Pistachio-green border. Great poetry.
