LUCIEN CLERGUE NU A LA MAIN, CAMARGUE 2010 Signed, numbered 1/30 front and back Silver print with frame 30 X 40 cm Gift of Atelier Lucien Clergue 2024 Lucien Clergue was born in Arles in 1934. In 1953, at a bullfight in Arles, he approached Pablo Picasso to show him his work, which Picasso immediately appreciated. Through Picasso, he met Jean Cocteau, who entrusted him with the photographic reportage for his film Le Testament d'Orphée. At first, his work focused on life and death (bullfighting, cemeteries, carrion). Then came female nudes, landscapes of his native Camargue, portraits of celebrities, gypsies and the land of Arles. In 1968, he laid the groundwork for the Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles. In 1979, he was awarded a Docteur ès Lettres with a specialization in photography from the University of Provence. In 1982, he was behind the creation of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles. In 2006, he became the first photographer to be elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
