Three volumes in-4, full contemporary calf, spine with 5 ornate nerves, titles and tomaisons on brown morocco (rubbing, accidents and missing spines). From Jean-Louis de Lorme Amsterdam 1711. First complete edition in 3 volumes (the first part, from Paris to Ispahan, was published in 1686, but is supplemented here by the other two parts, a general description of the Persian Empire in the fields of science, politics, morals and religion, and a voyage from Ispahan to Bandar-Abassi). Numerous folding plates and maps: I/ 279pp, 18 plates, [1] f. for frontispiece; II/ 454 pp, 15 plates (1 tear); III/ 254 pp, [13] ff table. 38 plates (2 tears) (Numerous wet spots in text) Jean Chardin, jeweler and diamond merchant, traveled to the East Indies for the King of France, and later for the King of England, and won the trust of the King of Persia. He recounted his travels and what he saw in Persia, making his accounts an important historical source on Persian culture and civilization. Admired by Montesquieu and Rousseau, this work remains an exceptional reference.
