CORNEILLE (Pierre)
The Theatre of Pierre Corneille. Reveu & corrigé par l'Autheur. À Rouen, Et se vend à Paris, Guillaume de Luynes, 1664-1666. 4 volumes in-8, jansenist red morocco, gilt title on spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Vve Brany).
Partly original collective edition of Corneille's theater, with reformed spelling (Picot, no. 109).
It is illustrated with 3 title-frontispices and 24 intaglio figures by Lesueur, Chauveau and Spirinx, taken from the collective edition of 1660; the figure for La Toison d'or, which is new, was engraved by G. Ladame.
The fourth part is entirely new and contains Sertorius, Sophonisbe and Othon.
A fine copy.
Without the 3 figures for the fourth part, which Picot says was originally planned without illustrations. Skilful restoration of paper on the edge or corner of several engravings, often with pen retouching.
