Russian painter Nicolas Swertschkoff specialized in battle scenes, genre scenes and horses. He studied in Saint Petersburg, where he began exhibiting in 1839, while working for the government. He quickly became a highly sought-after animal painter for society, with his hunting and racing scenes. He lived in Paris between 1862 and 1864. He was appointed Imperial Painter to the Russian Court in 1864.
