Samuel Mohn Leipzig Viewing Cup
circa 1807, unmarked, incised number 83, signed in black "S. Mohn fec." and inscribed on an old adhesive label "... Porzellanmaler Mohn/lebte 1807 in Leipzig", cylindrical cup with eared handle, fine polychrome overglaze painting and gilt rims, large gold-framed rectangular cartouche on the front with mid-mountain landscape, riverside promenade, manor house, enthroned castle ruins, church and figural staffage, the reverse with allegory of an arm protruding from a cloud with a small bouquet of flowers, rare cup with approx. 2.5 cm long hairline crack above the ruin and a fine stress crack at the base of the handle, otherwise in good condition for its age, h 6 cm. Artist's note: German porcelain and glass painter (1762 Niederklobikau to 1815 Dresden), active in various German cities, workshop in Leipzig from 1806, resident in Dresden from 1809.
