View of a body of water below wooded slopes with individual houses during an approaching thunderstorm, with a waterfall in the centre, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "C. Ernst Morgenstern 1871", on the reverse with a stamp probably from the Nazi era (?) and on the stretcher an excerpt from the Thieme-Becker artist's encyclopaedia, extensive overpainting and rubbing in the margins, behind glass in a gold-coloured magnificent frame, folded dimensions approx. 30 x 43 cm. Artist information: German landscape painter and etcher (1847 Munich - 1928 Wolfshau), son of the painter Christian Morgenstern, father of the poet Christian Morgenstern, pupil of his father and Josef Schertel, travelled to Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and France, later joined Eduard Schleich the Elder a. Theodor Kotsch, initially worked as a painter and etcher. Theodor Kotsch, initially focussed on Upper Bavaria, since his appointment as head of the landscape class and the class for graphic arts at the Breslau art school in 1884, especially studies from the Giant Mountains, during his teaching career in Breslau, inspired by the Barbizon school, he introduced open-air painting into the curriculum, later also took over an etching class, source: Thieme-Becker and Internet.
