The model in this portrait is holding the Elementa chemiae by Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738), a famous Leiden physician and professor who was the first to give the chemical composition of blood, milk and other biological fluids, and to classify diseases scientifically. In addition to Hippocrates' textbook, the library includes books by Gerard van Swieten, another famous Leiden doctor (1700 - 1772), a pupil of the former, and Frederic Hoffmann of Halle (1660-1742), Boerhaave's rival.
