(1588). GUEVARA (A. de). L'HORLOGE DES PRINCES, AVEC LE TRES RENOMME LIVRE DE MARC AURELE. Paris, Denis Cotinet, 1588. In-8 of [32]-395 leaves, overlapping vellum, traces of laces (contemporary binding). French translation by R. B. de Grise and Nicolas de Herberay of the well-known work by Spanish Franciscan Antonio de Guevara, bishop of Cadiz and Mondenodo (1480-1545). Adapted from a text by the Stoic emperor Marcus Aurelius, this politico-moral work is one of the most popular texts of the 16th century, combining "novelistic matter, political substance and openness to the realities of the time". (Redondo); it had a definite influence on the political leaders of the time, notably Charles V. Light rings, small marginal gallery, small lack of vellum. A good copy in its original binding.
