According to recent scholarship, the notable name "Master with the Parrot" stands for a group of painters who together in an Antwerp workshop specialized in depictions of Madonnas with child, in which the child feeds a parrot. Max J. Friedländer added a stylistically related group of Madonnas to this main group with parrot, to which the present painting also belongs. In these paintings, Mary is giving the child her breast. The Madonna type in both groups shows the stylistic influence of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, who was active in Antwerp at the same time.
