The Bolognese painter Lucio Massari was initially trained in Bartolomeo Passarotti's studio before working as an assistant to Ludovico Carracci at the beginning of the 17th century. The present composition with the Triumph of David is a smaller version of the painting in the Galleria Pallavicin in Rome. It shows the adoption of Annibale and Ludovico Carracci's teaching, which Massari skillfully combined with new impulses from the classical works of Annibale's pupil Domenichino. As Federico Zeri has already observed, Massari's "Triumph" illustrates these early 17th century tendencies and can be regarded as an important early Baroque work.
