Frans de Momper
Funfair in a village
Oil on canvas (relined). 105 x 139 cm.
Remains of signature lower left: F ... mper.
Provenance
Gallery Pintelon, Aalst. - Belgian private collection.
Frans de Momper was the nephew of the landscape painter Joos de Momper. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1629. He painted landscapes in the manner of his uncle. Later, his palette was influenced by the tonal colors of Jan van Goyen. The present colorful landscape was probably created before de Momper's move to the northern Netherlands in 1646. A similar composition with a village festival was in the French art trade in 1978 (see RKD picture archive, no. 547204).
