Jean-Baptiste MAUZAISSE (Corbeil 1784 - Paris 1844)
Study for a ceiling in the Louvre

In 1802, Jean-Simon Berthélemy painted the ceiling of the Rotonde de Mars. In 1823, the painting was severely damaged by damp. The restorer Hacquin proposed to repair a quarter of the painting, but his proposal was rejected. In 1826, Mauzaisse was commissioned to restore the ceiling at a cost of 6,000 francs, based on a reduced copy of Berthélemy's original work and with some modifications.
