Bound in full green morocco, spine decorated with fillets and title-piece, double gilt fillet framing the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, inner lace, gilt head, untrimmed, common slipcase. (binding signed Farez). First edition of the masterpiece of French literature. According to Clouzot, "preference should obviously be given to copies bound in two volumes". Copy complete with the first leaf "To Marie-Antoine-Jules Senart" (with the error Sénart instead of Sénard), the dedication to Louis Bouilhet, and the printer's name on the verso of the false-title and its various bibliographical characteristics: at the bottom of the title: Traduction et reproduction réservées. - At bottom of page 490: Paris, Typ. De Mme Vve Dondey-Dupré, rue Saint-Louis, 46. - P. 7, line 23: "et la posa" (interval too long). - P. 22, line 1: "espaces" (instead of espacés). - P. 67: the number 67 is not printed. - P. 145, line 24: "demanda-t-elle" (instead of se demanda-t-elle). - P. 282, lines 2 and 3: the words "cheveux" and "de grosses" are misprinted. - P. 475, line 20: the word "Théodore" is misprinted.
