JAPAN - MEIJI era - MUTSUHITO 122nd Emperor of Japan February 3, 1867 - July 30, 1912 Radiant sun in a polylobe surrounded by the legend punctuated by paulownia flowers. R/. Face value between two branches of paulownia flowers surmounted by a chrysanthemum flower (kiku). Striated edge. ♦ Fr 51 10 Yen gold year 30 (1900) Osaka (8.30 g) Tiny dents on the edge. Trace of cleaning. Very nice. The emperor's coat of arms and royal seal depict a chrysanthemum flower with 16 double petals. Chrysanthemums were introduced to Japan during the Nara era (710-794) as a medicinal plant. It first appeared under Emperor Go-Toba (1180-1239). The paulownia flower is violet and its leaves are heart-shaped. The tree, nicknamed the "imperial tree", originated in China and was imported to Japan. Named after Anna Pavlowna, daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia.
