The emperor's coat of arms and royal seal depict a chrysanthemum flower with 16 double petals. Chrysanthemums were introduced to Japan during the Nara era (710-794) as a medicinal plant. It first appeared under Emperor Go-Toba (1180-1239). The paulownia flower is violet and its leaves are heart-shaped. The tree, nicknamed the "imperial tree", originated in China and was imported to Japan. Named after Anna Pavlowna, daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia.
