An alabaster pyxis from the Middle East, of a rounded tapering shape with a flared top, capped with a smaller flattened dome lid bearing a short cylindrical handle. The side of the pyxis have two nubs meant to be handles. Its base is somewhat rounded so that if one were to tap it, it would wobble back and forth. Placing a light within the pyxis shows the striking coloration and pattern that alabaster is known for. Ancient Middle-East - CA. 800 BC Dimensions: H: 4 1/4 in., (10.8 cm.); D: 4 1/2 in., (11.4 cm.) Very good overall with some dirt on inside of container, likely from place of burial. A small part of the lid has a slightly roughened texture, may be original.
